Players Pickleball: At a Glance

As a company, we love information. Experimental data collection and analysis, in-depth materials explanations, the underlying physics of paddle/ball interactions, we love all of it!

Sometimes, though, we realize it can be a bit much to consume! For that reason, we've created this quick primer so you can learn as much as possible in just a short amount of time--then if you want to read more, you can dig deeper into our content!

Who is Players Pickleball?

Players Pickleball was founded by Josh Bechtel and Mike Bennett. Combined, they have over 40 years of sporting goods product development including Pickleball, Hockey, Lacrosse, Golf, Billiards, Bikes and more.

How was Players Pickleball Founded?

Players Pickleball Established 2016

Players Pickleball was founded in 2016 by Josh and Mike after a few years of making pickleball paddles as a contract manufacturer. A structural realignment to focus solely on Pickleball made sense and allowed us to pivot in that direction.

What Makes Players Pickleball Different?

We believe it is our approach to paddle making that makes us different. We're truly fascinated by the testing & development process and our goal to only produce paddles that have measurable improvements over the competition. We've created several proprietary test rigs that allow us to objectively measure paddle performance independently from the feedback we get from play testing. It's allowed us to understand better than ever the correlation between player feedback about a paddle and the material properties of that paddle!

What's an Example of this Scientific Approach to Paddle Making?

Our proprietary Gel-Core honeycomb is perhaps the best example. We had an idea for an internal vibration damping & mass distributing innovation. Rather than go straight to production and relying on marketing to sell the idea, we first built prototypes. We lab tested those prototypes on our test rigs and immediately saw an increased sweet spot and a lower frequency and amplitude on ball impact. With that, we produced 3 identical-looking paddles all the same weight, one with Gel-Core and the other two without. Then, in a double-blind test, we had players rate the paddles in 10 different categories. The results were stunning. Without having any idea the differences between the paddles, players were able to choose the Gel-Core as their preferred paddle. almost across the board! The combination of lab testing with real-world player feedback and the direct correlation led to the production of the Rogue line of Gel-Core paddles.

What's the Paddle Lineup?

Players Pickleball offers 3 primary lines of paddles:

  • Scout - This is our entry-level paddle. Ideal for those new to the sport and just testing the waters. It's a solidly-performing paddle at a fantastically low price.
  • Rogue - This is our most popular product line. Comprised of three differently shaped models, the SI, RSI, and ESI, the Rogue makes the most of its Gel-Core honeycomb and our direct-to-you business model to give you a very high-performance paddle at a price that's tough to match! Sweetening the Rogue even more, it can be custom made with your own design!

  • Avant - Featuring our innovative Exo-Frame edge guard for the most direct hand-to-paddle experience, the Avant is available in multiple configurations, and is customizable by you!

Why Isn't Players Pickleball Available Everywhere?

The answer is simple. We want to save you money. When you buy direct from us on our website, there is no "middle man" taking a share of your payment. In looking at our pricing model, we don't have to account for layers of profit margins, meaning we can build a better paddle with more details & features at a lower price to you.

Why don't Players Pickleball Paddles Cost More?

One funny comment we occasionally hear is that some players won't use a paddle if it's not expensive and for that reason, they looked right past our Rogue paddle as an option for them. If you'd like to spend more money, be our guest, but it's best if you understand where your money is going before you do that! Are you spending more because of what the paddle is made of or because the profits from your purchase needs to be shared with retailers, distributors, and the manufacturer, along with marketing, sponsorships, and more. In many cases, increased cost of a paddle goes to all of those things, rather than a better paddle. This means a more expensive paddle doesn't necessarily translate to a paddle that is actually made of better materials! We sell direct to our customers, eliminating unnecessary markup.

What Does Players Pickleball do for the Environment?

All of our paddles ship in recycled/recyclable/compostable/eco-friendly shipping boxes and packing materials. Even the glue on the tape we use is corn-starch based rather than petroleum based. It may seem like a small thing, but sending foam and plastic out with every paddle we sell simply wasn't something we were willing to do.

We also work with a charity called "One Tree Planted" and for every paddle we sell, we plant a tree. It's that simple. When you buy a paddle from us, you're helping a team of dedicated professionals plant en entire tree that with a little luck will grow up to help support a diversified and healthy ecosystem!

We also periodically create special edition paddles that go even further, like our Earth Day 2019 Special Edition Paddle. For every one of those paddles we sell, we plant 5(!) trees!

What's Up With the Squirrel Logo?

To us, pickleball is a sport that above all else, is about fun. It also requires nimbleness of body and mind, a playful spirit, determination, and a clever approach. We wanted a mascot and a logo that embodied all of those traits. Based on our collective experience, a squirrel was the obvious choice.
